UK Government Conservation and Environmental Bodies

The Association of National Park Authorities
brings together the 14 National Park Authorities of England,
Scotland and Wales to raise the profile of the National Parks
and to promote joint working.

The core purpose of the Department for Farming and Rural
Affairs (DEFRA) is to improve the current and future
quality of life. They do this by integrating environmental,
social and economic objectives - putting sustainable development
into practice every day, and by championing sustainable
development as the way forward for Government.

The Environment Agency plays an important role
in conservation and ecology and is working to create an
environment where wildlife can thrive, especially along rivers
and in wetlands. The UK Biodiversity Action Plan is the
Government's initiative for nature conservation and The
Environment Agency is helping to achieve its goals.

The Forestry Commission has the mission to
protect and expand Britain's forests and woodlands and increase
their value to society and the environment.

The Joint Nature Conservation Committee is the
statutory adviser to Government on UK and international nature
conservation. Its work contributes to maintaining and enriching
biological diversity, conserving geological features and
sustaining natural systems.

The National Biodiversity Network (NBN) is a
new and innovative way of sharing wildlife information in the UK
and is building tools to make this information accessible in a
digitised and exchangeable form. By providing easy access to the
information people need about wildlife, wise and informed
decisions can be made to ensure our natural environment is
diverse, rich and sustainable now and for future generations.

Natural England work for people, places and
nature, to enhance biodiversity, landscapes and wildlife in
rural, urban, coastal and marine areas; promoting access,
recreation and public well-being, and contributing to the way
natural resources are managed so that they can be enjoyed now
and in the future.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency is
Scotland’s environmental regulator and adviser, responsible to
the Scottish Parliament through Ministers. As well as their role
in controlling pollution, they work with others to protect and
improve our environment.

The UK Biodiversity Action Plan (UKBAP) was
published in January 1994 in response to Article 6 of the
Biodiversity Convention, to develop national strategies for the
conservation of biological diversity and the sustainable use of
biological resources.
