We are pleased to announce that we will be recruiting several new members of staff at the Westcountry Rivers Trust in 2011.

Communications Officer  OPEN

Salary £15,000-£18,000 depending on experience  

The Westcountry Rivers Trust is looking for someone with excellent communication skills and a good knowledge of the environmental or conservation sectors to become their Communications Officer.

The Communications Officer will be required to prepare press releases, articles and technical documents for publication in a variety of media types, including traditional print media, film/TV, online/websites and new media such as social networking sites.

The successful candidate will be equally at ease writing for both technical and non-technical audiences and will be capable of adjusting their style to suit the audience and media type being used. The holder of this role will be required to explore all aspects of the Trust’s work and will also interact with a diverse range of our external stakeholders such as farmers, anglers, government agencies, NGO’s and the wider public. Therefore strong interpersonal and oral communication skills are also essential.

The Communications Officer will particularly be working to prepare material for presentation on the web (and potentially other multimedia types) and so experience of web or multi-media publishing/authoring would be a huge advantage in the role. In addition, the Trust is looking to make more effective use of the web in its communications and so experience in the use of the web in outreach, education or marketing would also be an advantage.

Due to the technical nature of our work it will be essential for the Communications Officer to have a good knowledge or background in the environmental or conservation sectors. A degree is not an essential requirement but we are looking for someone who is passionate and knowledgeable about the environment and who has a keen interest in the communication of science and/or environmental education/outreach/engagement.

This post will be full time for a fixed-term of one year and will be based at the HQ of the Westcountry Rivers Trust in Stoke Climsland, Cornwall

Assistant Fisheries Officer  CLOSED

Salary £15,000-£17,500 depending on experience  

An Assistant Fisheries Officer is required for a one-year fixed-term contract to work in a small team delivering fisheries management to the Westcountry.   

This post does not require experience, but suitable qualifications, good social skills, and a keen interest in developing applied scientific skills and knowledge are all essential.

 The successful applicant will be motivated to deepen their understanding of fisheries, and the ecological systems that support them. 

A large part of this role will involve interaction with a diverse range of stakeholders such as farmers, anglers, government agencies, NGO’s and the wider public.  Therefore strong interpersonal skills are essential in addition to academic qualifications. .

Financial Accountant  CLOSED

Salary £22.5k – 27.5k plus contributory stakeholder pension and life insurance.

Due to a period of sustained growth, the Westcountry Rivers Trust is looking to appoint a Financial Accountant to work within their Finance Team.

Reporting to the Finance Director, the role will be responsible for all aspects of Financial Accounts including month end reporting, year-end reporting, ledgers, balance sheet, VAT, payroll and fixed assets.

A good knowledge of SAGE would be an advantage, a formal accounting qualification desirable and the ability to be a team player essential.

Angling Development Officer   CLOSED

Salary £20 – 25k per annum plus contributory stakeholder pension and life insurance.

The post is part of the Country Sports South West Project, which is funded by the Rural Development Programme for England. The project is a partnership between the British Association of Shooting & Conservation (BASC) and Westcountry Rivers Trust (WRT) to develop and promote country sports in the region to benefit rural economies and sustainable, integrated environmental management.  

The successful candidate will have a sound understanding of angling and rural sports in the South West region coupled with the ability to build strong working relationships. A relevant degree and post-graduate qualifications are preferable but not essential; relevant experience, computer literacy, a valid driving licence and transport are essential.

Duties will include, but are not limited to:  

  • Managing and developing the Trust’s day ticket angling scheme the ‘Westcountry Angling Passport’ and the online angling booking office;

  • Increasing the fishing opportunities available through the scheme in line with the conservation ethos of the Trust;

  • Linking opportunities for angling with other country sports and liaison with other project officers promoting country sports;

  • Contributing to the delivery of the wider objectives of the Country Sports and Tourism Project;

  • Reporting against targets to the project funders periodically and attending project steering meetings.

The post will be for a fixed term period of two years and based at the Westcountry Rivers Trust office at Stoke Climsland near Callington.
