At the Westcountry Rivers Trust, we see wildlife and biodiversity conservation as a measure of our success in ecosystem management, not as a target to orientate our action. Having said this, we have undertaken a number of direct river conservation projects aimed at restoring degraded rivers and fisheries. These projects have included a number of projects, such as the WaterwaysNet and Camel Invasive Weeds projects, that have focused on the mangement of invasive plants on Westcountry rivers.

The Trust also run a salmon conservation hatchery on the river Tamar. The Endsleigh Hatchery takes wild salmon from the river and raises their progeny through the difficult early stages, to the point at which they are more likely to survive in the wild and then releases them back into their river. We are undertaking this active intervention policy only until the natural habitat is restored to a functional level.

In addition to these conservation projects, WRT have also recently worked in partnership with several private and public sector groups to deliver a number of substantial engineering projects in the form of multi-species fish-passes on Westcountry rivers. The delivery of these projects is testament to the strength gained through real partnerships working to deliver shared objectives.
